A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Monday.
But there were no immediate reports of any deaths or damage.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 350 kms northwest of the provincial capital of Palu, at a depth of 33 kms below sea level.
The quake struck the province at 1 p.m. local time and was felt strongly in the capital.
Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia which lies in an area of intense seismic activity.
Indonesia was one of several countries hard hit by the tsunami, a deep sea earthquake that occurred in December, 2004.
More than 225,000 people died in the disaster in eleven countries.
