Conservation Groups accused of Piracy

Whaling research institute has accused environmental group Greenpeace of piracy under article 101 of the United Nations Law of the Sea.

Greenpeace is pursuing the spotter ship Nisshin-Maru in the Southern Ocean to protest against the slaughter of Antarctic whales in the name of research.

A spokesman for Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hideki Moronuki, says the fleet has also been approached by a protest boat belonging to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He says while it is laudable both groups are trying to protect the marine environment, they continue to disregard the international law of the sea.
