Push to extend Barrier Reef marine park

One of Australia’s minor political parties, the Greens, say a plan to extend the Great Barrier Reef marine park could make the country a world leader in environmental conservation.

Senator Bob Brown is calling on the next federal government to extend the marine park, off the north-eastern state of Queensland, by more than 800,000 square kilometres, to include the Coral Sea.

He says the area is an untapped resource for research into protecting reef systems against climate change.

“We’re seeing the destruction of marine eco-systems we’re seeing massive threat to species in the oceans as well as on the land and here we have a bulwark against that a stronghold and we really should be as Australians enormously proud of the Coral Sea,” he said.
