Marine Stewardship Council goes offshore

earthdive associate the Marine Stewardship Council is moving its Asia-Pacific headquarters from Sydney to Tokyo.

The Council runs an environmental accreditation service for fishing businesses around the world, and says it’s moving offshore because there’s more demand for certification in Japan.

Craig Bohm, from the Marine Conservation Society, says it’s disappointing.

“Unfortunately the Australian fishing industry has shown very little interest in that program,’ he says.

“They feel like they have a good reputation already and that they don’t need to have environmental certification to run their businesses.”
