Jellyfish swarming off west coast

A species of jellyfish that previously killed thousands of farmed salmon in Northern Ireland has gathered in swarms off Scotland’s west coast.

The Marine Conservation Society said mauve stringers have been spotted off Mull, Lewis and Fair Isle.

Billions of the creatures covered an area of up to 10 square miles off the County Antrim coast in 2007.

The society has been attempting to gauge unseasonable blooms of the jellyfish.
