A conservation group in NZ is urging the government to be more cautious in managing and setting fish catch levels.
Forest & Bird is concerned that not enough is known about fish stocks to make educated decisions under the Quota Management System.
Marine Conservation Advocate Kirstie Knowles says setting catch levels is a stab in the dark, because the government does not know the status of more than 80% of stocks.
She says more funding needs to be put into researching fish stocks, if we want to protect their future.
