A marine conservation group wants Canada to use this month’s G20 summit to promote an end to fishing subsidies.
Mission Blue has asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper to ask world leaders attending the Toronto summit to pledge not to expand fishing subsidy programs it says are helping ravage fish stocks.
The organization says the world’s fish stocks are on the verge of collapse because of overfishing.
It says an estimated $20 billion is spent each year on fisheries subsidies.
Mission Blue also wants G20 countries to prioritize “a strong outcome” at the World Trade Organization’s fisheries subsidies negotiations.
Mission Blue’s letter to Harper is signed by supporters that include actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Glenn Close and Edward Norton.
