Obama lays out climate action plan

Obama smiling

US President Barack Obama has laid out a package of measures aimed at curbing climate change, including limits on emissions from power plants. He also unveiled plans for an expansion of renewable energy projects, improved flood resilience and calls for an international climate deal. Administration officials had earlier rejected the idea of a “carbon tax”. President Obama pledged in his inaugural address in January to act on climate change in his second term.

‘Moral obligation’

Speaking at Georgetown University in Washington DC, President Obama said: “As a president, as a father and as an American, I am here to say we need to act.” President Obama mocked critics who contend climate change is not a threat.

“I don’t have much patience for anyone who denies that this challenge is real,” he...

Australia v Japan – whaling in the Antarctic

Whaling fleet and protesters

Australia is hoping to put a permanent end to Japan’s annual slaughter of hundreds of whales in the Southern Ocean, in a landmark legal challenge that begins this week. Australia, a vocal opponent of Japan’s annual “scientific” hunts in the Antarctic, says it is confident that the international court of justice (ICJ) in The Hague will outlaw the hunts at the end of a highly anticipated case that is due to start on Wednesday. The whaling fleet attempts to kill 935 minke whales and 50 fin whales every year in the Southern Ocean – which Australia declared a whale sanctuary in 1999 – amid protests from conservation groups and countries in the region.

Australia’s attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, said he was confident that the ICJ would ban the hunts before the next expedition begin...

Where have all the groupers gone?

Diver doing a reef check

The coral reefs in Labuan are healthy but there are concerns over the depletion of commercially valuable species like groupers and lobsters. This is based on a survey off Labuan conducted for the first time by Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) which found that at least 50% were live corals at the sites that were surveyed earlier this month. RCM programme manager Alvin Chelliah said that the live coral coverage was very good as they noticed a high diversity of coral species and marine organisms.

However, he said they were concerned about a lack of commercially valuable species.

“The Reef Check survey is based on identifying indicator species on the reefs. For example, we look for common reef fish like groupers, which are highly sought after for consumption.

“Throughout our survey, we only recorde...

Blue jellyfish found in Newquay rock pool

Blue jellyfish

A jellyfish usually found in colder waters has been discovered stranded near Newquay, Cornwall. The unusual blue jellyfish was spotted by a group from the Manor House Activity Centre in St Issey. The jellyfish, found at Trevone Bay, has been given to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.

“We’ve seen several washing up over recent weeks but this is the first live specimen we’ve come across,” Lee Charnock from the aquarium said.

“Full-grown specimens can reach up to 15 centimetres in diameter and have metre-long stinging tentacles which they use to catch their prey.”

There are more than 200 known species of jellyfish. The blue jellyfish is usually found in the western Pacific around Japan and off the west coast of Scotland.

Dive Spirit Fakarava

Dive Spirit poster

Dive Spirit Fakarava offers 3 dives per day, everyday in Tuamotu, Polynesia. We usually go to the North channel, but we also like going to the South channel when the weather conditions are adequate and the minimum number of divers is reached. There are many sites and variants (depending on the tides), within and around the North channel. 3 days of diving minimum is recommended to fully enjoy all the beauty that Fakarava offers. However, we recommend a one week stay in order to take full advantage of both channels.

Tens, even hundreds of sharks, manta rays, schools of priacanthus, perches, turtles, napoleon fishes… all of that with an exceptionally beautiful seabed.

Because of the distance to the channel, the package 2-tanks (morning) is the most appropriate...
